COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a course dealing with principles of psychological and biblical counseling, providing ministry to the physically, spiritually, and emotionally ill. This study is integrated with other more traditional aspects of pastoral care.  Self-understanding and listening skills are emphasized, as well as religious resources and exercises such as Scripture, prayer, and openness and obedience to the inner direction of the Holy Spirit is emphasized.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The following are competencies for Ordination Course of Study which are achieved by this course:

1. Ability to appropriately express pastoral care and concern for individuals and families in crises, passages, and the normal routines of life. (CP-14)

2. Ability to offer spiritual counseling and to discern for referral counseling needs beyond the minister’s ability. (CP-13)

3. Ability to apply the knowledge of basic counseling gained from historic Christian and appropriate contemporary models. (CP-16)

4. Ability to describe and apply personal communication skills, nurturing relationships, conflict resolution skills for marriage and family. (CH-13)

            I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK

 

1. Attend: Attendance is mandatory.

Attend all class sessions  1000 points

Attend 9 class sessions      800 points

            Attend 8 class sessions      600 points

            Attend Less Than 8 class and you will have to retake the class.

 

2..Read the texts the week BEFORE the day of the assignments when they are due to be

discussed. There are 35 chapters that you are required to read,

Read 35 chapters for 1000 points

Read 29-34 chapters for 900 points

Read 24-28 chapters for 800 points

Read 19-23 chapters for 600 points

Read less than 19 chapters for Zero points.

 

I will count the chapter as read as you submit your Big Idea paragraph for the

chapter.

 

3. Write Big Idea Paragraph For Each Chapter (3500 possible points)

A “big idea” is what you think the author would want you to walk away with regarding

what he/she wrote. This is not an exercise in listing the subtitles in the chapter. Narrow down the author’s presentation into one important thoughts, or “big idea.” Then write a short paragraph to express that big idea.

 

            It may be helpful to imagine that you are responsible for teaching the material in the

            assigned text. What would you deem the most important concepts of the chapter

            to be. One would assume that your choice will differ from your cohorts.

 

           Rubric: 100 points

                        Topic sentence  20 pts

                        Three to Five supporting sentences     20 pts

                        Concluding sentence   20 pts

                        Content 40pts             [Content refers to the big idea you pulled from the reading]

 

            Papers are to be Times New Roman, Font 14 double spaced.

 

4.. Role Play: In a role play there will be two participants, Counselor and Counselee. During the

            course you must full fill each role at least once. Vignettes will be given to you just before

            you begin your “counseling session.” Each session 100 points.

 

5. Reflection:   The films chosen for this course depict various persons that a pastoral counselor may encounter. The purpose of the assignment is for the student to express how a characters or situation in the film give you insight into how you might go about caring for that individual.

           Rubric: 100 points

                        Topic sentence  20 pts
